                       Shelby-Metro area softball teams
that should contend for postseason honors this spring.

Arlington
Coach: Brandon Morgan
Record last season: 25-19
Outlook: Arlington dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Munford in last year's
regionals but could go a lot farther in 2012. Morgan said this will be the best team
the school has ever had with only one starter gone and several talented newcomers arriving.

Pitcher Alex Holt, who already has a 19-strikeout perfect game win over Collierville to her credit. If they all come through, the Tigers could very well make their first trip to the state tournament.

Arlington Lady Tigers ends the season as 4th in the state  2012

Arlington Lady Tigers softball team showed face for the first time in school history at the
TSSAA state tournament. 4th in the state for their first showing is a great accomplishment for the girls and third year coach Brandon Morgan. Lady tigers have made history under this new coach and their future is looking brighter every year.
Leading off the lady tigers is junior pitcher Alex Holt.
This is team is sure to making another appreance at the state tournament.
Holt a junior, has been a nominee for the Pepsi Best of the Pepsi for three years and was awarded Pepsi Best of the Preps softball player of the year for Memphis Metro this  2012 season.

Region 7-AAA: Alex Holt pitched a two-hitter for Arlington as the Tigers eliminated Hardin County 6-1. Arlington will play at Munford on Wednesday.
Class AAA sectionals: Arlington advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Collierville, 4-2. Alex Holt got the win for the Lady Tigers (29-14).

MURFREESBORO— After sustaining a thorough beating in its first game, the Arlington softball team bounced back with a solid 10-0 win in an elimination game against Seymour High School.

Junior pitcher Alex Holt tossed a complete game shutout in the win, striking out five Seymour batters against only three hits allowed.

Holt got all the support she needed in the second inning, when Arlington scored three runs on the strength of three hits and a walk.

“We didn’t work this hard all season to get our butts kicked and sent back home,”Arlington coach Brandon Morgan said. “If we’re going to lose I want dirt on us, not giving up, fighting right down to the last out. If we go out like that, that’s ok.”

MURFREESBORO — Arlington softball advanced in the state tournament on the strength of one strong inning offensively, and some timely defensive plays as they outlasted Munford 6-2 today in a Class AAA elimination game.
The Lady Tigers only had seven hits to their credit for the game, but six of them came in their six-run fourth inning.
“We still didn’t hit the ball particularly hard that inning,” said Arlington coach Brandon Morgan. “Bloops — and the bloops had killed us all season against us, and this time we benefitted from them.”
Freshman left fielder Savannah Baker started the outburst with a two-run single to center field, and senior center fielder Hannah Harrell and junior pitcher Alex Holt followed with two-run singles of their own.

With a four-run cushion, Holt shut down the Munford offense for the next three innings, allowing only three base runners in the process.
Holt was the beneficiary of some solid play from her defense, as junior right fielder Christina Thomas robbed Munford junior Tara Comer’s line drive to open the fourth with a sprawling catch.

“Our defense was the difference in that game,” Morgan said. “Our defense played fantastic. A couple huge catches in the outfield … and we pitched great for six innings.”
Holt, who was pitching for the third time in two days, ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh.
Munford worked the bases full with nobody out, bringing the tying run to the plate and prompting Morgan to bring junior pitcher Kaitlyn Miller in, shifting Holt to third base.

The move paid off.

Holt stabbed a line drive at third base and dove to the bag to double off the runner that strayed too far from the base, securing the victory for the Lady Tigers.
“It’s definitely exciting,” Holt said. “I knew we had to get two more outs, so I had to catch the ball and get to third somehow. I kind of made an ugly dive to get there.”

Munford grinded out two early runs against Holt, but its offense went flat late in the game.
But after going 0-and-2 in their first state tournament appearance last season, the Lady Cougars are
feeling confident moving forward.

Junior pitcher Holt concludes
                             Record breaking 2012 season

Alex Holt of Arlington High school had a record breaking season for the Lady Tigers softball team. She set 3 school records in her third year as a varsity starter.

Junior pitcher Alex Holt dominated in area softball her junior year of high school. She managed 16 hits, 5 doubles, 2 HRs, 11 RBIs, a batting average of .471 an on base percentage of .514 and a slugging percentage of .794 in her third year at Arlington High School.

That was a dream season for me,” Holt said.

Holt was hopeful to continue that success in her senior year at Arlington High School, however, her family moved to California.

She set a personal goal to go to state this past season. The Lady tigers went to state.

“It actually put me in the top part of the Memphis Metro area,”Holt said. “Which I was not expecting.”

Holt has benefited from her strong ties to Arlington High School. Along with growing up in San Diego, both of her parents support. Her father, John, works with her 5-6 times a week, along with renowned pitching Coach Ernie Parker, while her mother, Lisa, is currently a domestic engineer. Holt also has an older sister Ashley, and younger brother, Greg. Even her grandparents who live in Palm Beach Florida come to watch when they can.

“It’s always been a good atmosphere at home,” Holt said. “I have a team at home and on the field that’s always going to work along with me.”

Holt considers her father the greatest influence in her softball career. Ernie Parker is right there as well.

Despite only being under Coach Brandon Morgan for 3 years, Holt was still able to gain a great experience in her time with him.

“He would say things to me that I did not understand at the time, however it all makes sense to me now,” Holt said. “It’s all the small things that make Coach Morgan a great coach to me.”

Looking toward next season with Coach Morgan, Holt wants to do the 2012 season all over again only to win states next year which is her senior year. Her goal is to play in college (this interview was before she moved to Ca).

Holt doesn’t have any expectations of qualifying for the Olympic team , but in four years she hopes to be part of the American Team.

“I want to do it so bad, it kind of hurts,” she said.

Well, with the kind of season Alex Holt has had, she just might do it.
